Builder gel gives you salon-quality nails at home — but only if you apply it correctly. Here’s exactly how to do it, step by step.

What you’ll need

You don’t need much to get started. The Beetles Builder Gel 9-in-1 Kit has everything in one box — builder gel, base coat, top coat, nail forms, brush, and file. No hunting for extras.

You’ll also need a UV or LED lamp, a nail file (180 grit), a cuticle pusher, a nail dehydrator, an acid-free primer, and lint-free wipes.

The application — step by step

Step 1 — Prep your nails. Remove old polish, wash and fully dry your hands, shape your nails, push back cuticles, lightly buff the surface to remove shine, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Bad prep is the number one cause of lifting — don’t rush this.

Step 2 — Dehydrate and prime. Apply nail dehydrator, let it dry, follow with a thin layer of acid-free primer, then apply your base coat and cure for 60 seconds under LED (2 minutes under UV).

Step 3 — Apply the slip layer. Apply a very thin, almost sheer layer of builder gel across the nail. Do NOT cure this layer — it helps the next layer bond and spread smoothly. Keep gel away from your cuticles.

Step 4 — Build your apex. Place a small bead of gel in the center of the nail and float it outward toward the tip using light strokes. Let it self-level for a few seconds. Flip your finger upside down for 5–10 seconds — gravity pulls the gel to the center and creates a natural, rounded shape. Work one or two nails at a time.

Step 5 — Cure. Cure under LED for 60 seconds. The gel will feel slightly sticky — that’s normal.

Step 6 — Shape and refine. File and shape your nails, smooth any uneven spots, then wipe away dust with a lint-free wipe.

Step 7 — Top coat and done. Apply top coat, cap the free edge (swipe along the nail tip to seal), cure for 60 seconds, then wipe off any sticky residue with isopropyl alcohol.

3 mistakes to avoid

  • Getting gel on your skin is the top cause of lifting. Clean up edges before curing.
  • Thick layers — always build in thin layers. You can add more, but you can’t take it back.
  • Skipping dehydration — natural oils stop gel from bonding, even on clean nails.
